Blackwater
Equestrian Center is nestled in Blackwater State Forest,
which is the largest state forest in Florida. It is located
in the Florida panhandle, northeast of Pensacola. The park
is named after the beautiful Blackwater River, which begins
in North Alabama and runs southwest into Blackwater Bay near
Milton, Florida. Blackwater River is unique because it is
one of the purest sand bottom rivers in the nation.
Blackwater Equestrian Center was developed by lifelong horse
enthusiast and real estate investor, Howard Robbins. Like
many other equestrians, Mr. Robbins constantly confronted
the same conflict- not having enough time to enjoy
his horses. He knew from experience that whether he owned a
5-acre tract or a 40,000 acre ranch, both would require a lot of
maintenance.
“When you own your own place you set out with full
intentions of enjoying your horses,” Mr. Robbins explains.
“You step out of the truck and see that the pastures need
mowing, weeds need spraying, the tractor needs fuel, the
stalls need cleaning, the gate is sagging… It’s a never
ending battle. Then you ask yourself, ‘What happened to my
dream of enjoying my horses?'”
A few years ago Mr. Robbins sold his ranch and purchased
another piece of property. While he was building his new
home the only rental property he could find was a
condominium. While he wasn’t looking forward to this new
lifestyle he later found that he actually enjoyed the
concept. There was no yard work calling his name. When he
returned home from a long day he could actually relax. He
had friendly neighbors that he enjoyed cookouts and
gatherings with. It was peaceful. Then the light bulb went
off! Why could horse people not enjoy this same way of
living? Mr. Robbins searched high and low for such a
development - a condo/ranch. While he found communities that
resembled his idea, they were not exactly what he was
looking for. Not one to sit around and wait, Mr. Robbins
decided to create it. And so he began development on
Blackwater Equestrian Center.
